When you think of 'solidarity'...
During some of our events during the year 2014-15, a short questionnaire was circulated in the audience that asked respondents to list possible organizations, groups or persons they recalled when they encountered the word 'solidarity'. The survey was anonymous and there were no limits on the number of answers one could give.
By an overwhelming majority, respondents listed organizations, not groups or individuals. It was evident that organizations were more familiar to attendees who were engaged in networks of solidarity with social movements and campaigns for social justice, both locally and transnationally. Most respondents offered more than one answer to each question, thus reflecting the complex and connective patterns of engagement that they were aware of or engaged in.
